Do you know what your customers will want for Christmas 2022?

With the year speeding by, retailers and D2C brands need to have Christmas on their minds now to ensure as many sales as possible during the all-important Q4 period.

As the go-to source for more than 20,000 journalists and influencers looking for products to feature in articles, Press Loft has their fingers on the pulse of upcoming trends – and has already seen nods to changes in consumer wants and needs for Christmas 2022.

Whilst aesthetic trends will always have their place at Christmas and will emerge in the coming weeks, this year they are being underpinned by cultural shifts and lifestyle factors in some very distinct ways.

Low-cost Luxury

As we increasingly move into a time of high costs of living and uncertainty worldwide, consumers are expected to approach Christmas, already a costly time for many, with more caution than ever this year. Customers will likely begin their shopping and planning early in an effort to spread the expense and avoid costly surprises closer to the time.

In terms of gifting, emphasis will be placed on lower-priced items, however, customers will still expect a level of quality and luxury regardless of price. When higher-priced items are purchased, it may be done so with contributions from several parties - so gift vouchers and group-buying options will be welcomed.

When it comes to revamping the home ahead of hosting Christmas, this same desire for low-cost but high-return purchasing will be present. People may lean towards multipurpose items, especially when it comes to furniture, or rental services to ensure the most bang for their buck.

Seasonless Style

As we all continue to be more considerate of the things we purchase, both from an economic and environmental perspective, more emphasis will be placed on pieces and products that can be used interchangeably throughout the year.

Think a garland made of stars that could be used at Christmas, New Year or for birthday parties; fairy lights that could be hung in a bedroom year-round, a solstice celebration or Christmas; or tableware that can be pulled out for any special occasion, whether that’s a festive feast or a graduation dinner.

A departure from strictly traditional Christmas motifs and colour palettes, here we will see consumers extending their individual styles, passions and tastes through to the Christmas season; using elevated additions to make it more special but staying true to who they are and ensuring any purchases will be used again and again.

Sustainable Swaps

A traditionally wasteful time of the year, in 2022, consumers are going to be more conscious than ever of their excess consumption and impact on the environment. New adaptions and advancements in eco-friendly processes and materials mean that both neutral and maximalist colour palettes can be applied to sustainable designs. Extra attention will also be paid to the small things that add up to big waste, such as tape, crackers, wrap and disposable serveware.

Crafty Christmas

With the turbulence of the last few years, quality time with loved ones will sit at the top of wishlists for many this year and, as a result, anything that aids it will be in demand. Continuing the newfound love many found for craft during the pandemic, craft kits and DIY packs are expected to make incredibly popular gifts again this year.

Whilst some will be wrapped and given on the big day, many will be gifted to mark the beginning of the season; allowing time to assemble and create any Christmas-themed craft in the lead-up, and decorate with it or gift it as a finished piece on the big day.
